simple Christmas gift ideas ♥

Merry almost Christmas friends!
we’re only a little over a week away from the big day and you might be overwhelmed with everything that needs to be done, but don’t be! bake some cookies, put the kettle on and have some tea with me while you browse through some of my pictures – then you’ll realize gift giving doesn’t have to be complicated or over-thought –
just simple and from the heart ♥

the baking inspired gift pictured above started when i saw this post and decided to make a batch of homemade vanilla extract for Christmas gifts! (just be sure to think ahead when gifting these, since it takes a while for the mixture to infuse before using) i knew i would want to pair the bottles with something before i handed them out – so off to browse the isles of Home Goods i went 🙂 i found the glass measuring cups (because who has enough of those?) some cute spatulas & kitchen towels – then some pretty ribbon for that extra special finish.
oh and the free printable labels for the bottles are from here – aren’t they super cute?!

another idea is to keep a basket or crate by your door – fill it with with multiples of the same gift – something simple, inexpensive & that anyone will love – something that you can hand out to your mail carrier when they delilver packages, the bus driver as the kids head out to school in the morning or for the neighbors that you see outside or beat you to it and pop up at your door first! this year i bought a few of these BIG boxes of chocolates from Costco – at only $10 each they don’t break the bank, but still feel like a substantial gift.

take it up a notch with some ribbon, jingle bells and even a handwritten note or tag!
boom. a simple store bought gift with a side of thoughtfulness –
people notice! and they feel special ♥

a few years ago i gave my mom and some friends this super fun slipper filled gift –
it was received so well and full of things that pamper your recipient.
the slippers were from target at the time but any slippers will work – even for a guy gift.
i tried to color coordinate the items i put inside which is easy to do once you start browsing the isles – first place i go to is the travel section! think nailpolish, chapstick/lip gloss, face masks, lotions, candy even a rolled up magazine or a book if it will fit.

i went next level for my mom’s gift by adding a small
kate spade monogrammed ID holder that i got super cheap during a black friday sale online.

when my girls were still bringing teacher gifts to school, mugs were my go-to starting point when i wanted to build a gift – not too expensive and can be filled with anything! initial mugs make it even more personal – i would put these types of gifts in a simple gift bag with tissue paper if it was travelling to school with my kids – if it is for neighbors or friends, just hand it over as is – with a waving hand & a big smile on your face 🙂

just a few more ideas i pulled from my camera roll from way back – these felt buckets were in the dollar section at target and the mugs were from pottery barn – they also had a huge sale on monogrammed blankets so i tucked a few of them into gifts for some of the couples we are friends with through my husbands work.

‘by the fire’ was the theme i had in mind when i put these gifts together (i know, i’m weird)
sipping cocoa with marshmallows & peppermint sticks, blankets and chocolate ♥

and in the end – if you’re in a pinch – grab a box of mandarin oranges – in those really fun crates they come in around Christmas time – and tie a ribbon around it with bells & chocolates tucked in between the fruit – and walk it right next door! (or send your kids ha.) who wouldn’t want to have that hand delivered on Christmas day?? with a house full of company that would be just the thing to put out between dinner & dessert. If you have extra time you can make an clementine wreath like the one pictured below using cellophane wrap and bakers twine to separate each one – jingle bells and a bow with a special note and leave that on doorknobs for neighbors who are out for the day – what a fun thing to come home to 🙂

i hope some of these ideas inspire you to give a few simple Christmas gifts
to people you don’t normally think about or maybe to someone who you think might feel overlooked ♥ happy gift giving friends!

bathroom remodel ♥

hello friends.
i posted a few pictures of our bathroom remodel a while back on Instagram
and i promised i would post in more detail about the project here on the blog,
with some source info & a few before pictures too ♥
(even though i always forget to take those until it’s too late #bloggerprobs)
we moved into this house almost 13 ago after leaving a small starter house that we had lived in for a couple years … when we got here the house had been updated in some ways but in a lot of ways i knew it would take a while before we made this house our home.

over the years we’ve been through every room in the house updating, tweaking, renovating … except for the main bathroom upstairs – it had been one of the last things on the list because we knew it would be a big job as well as a pain to tear apart because it’s the only shower in the house.

my husband & my dad did most of the work installing a new window, shower/tub, vanity, sink & toilet – and we purchased everything right at home depot.
Home Decorators Collection 49 in. W Marble Vanity Top in Arabescato Venato
Home Decorators Collection Thornbriar 48 in. W x 21.52 in. D Vanity Cabinet in Cement

the old tub & shower unit was original to the house (almost 40 yrs) and needed to be torn out completely – new drywall had to be installed behind it as well because of water damage
Delta Classic 400 32 in. x 60 in. x 74 in. 3-Piece Direct-to-Stud Alcove Surround in White
Delta Classic 400 60 in. Left-Hand Drain Rectangular Alcove Bathtub in High Gloss White
all the hardware for the sink & shower was from Home Depot as well

we opted for a separate tub & shower instead of a single unit mainly because we wanted the bigger/deeper tub since my girls love to take bubble baths (and by bubble baths i mean sitting in the tub for an hour reading books & watching 5 minute crafts until i yell time to get out)
(the other day one of them asked me if i would bring a snack up to them cause they were getting hungry….???? um. no.)

the aqua rolling cart was from ikea a few years back, but i think they still carry it and i know i’ve also seen a similar version of it at Michaels as well. i’m using it to store hand towels, washcloths and some shower supplies that are handy to have nearby but not in the shower
(razors, shaving cream, shower comb… you get the idea 🙂
the shower curtian (which i love) was from world market … i purchased it probably three years ago and was holding onto it for when we remodeled. i can’t seem to find it anywhere on the interwebs so i’m thinking it’s been discontinued 😦

i’ve had a lot of questions about the flooring we chose – it was a grayish wood colored waterproof laminate safe for bathrooms, and yes, we went right over the existing tile, added new molding and it worked like a charm. we considered tearing the tile out but it was level and undamaged so we decided against the extra work & mess!

thinking the wall behind the toilet is looking kinda bare
got my eye on this adhesive wall paper from target but we’ll see 🙂

the window in our bathroom was fairly large (not a typical bath size window) so when we replaced it, i knew i would want to keep it open as much as possible since it lets so much natural light into the bath & upstairs hallway – i shopped for weeks to find panels that i liked but they were either room darkening, too long or too short. so when i saw this simple white shower curtain it dawned on me to cut it right up the middle in half and i would have two panels that were the perfect size. i also bought a cloth shower curtain liner (did the same thing by cutting it in half) and hung it behind the white curtain on the same hooks for another layer of privacy (i hemmed the raw edges i cut with stitch witchery and the iron:)
the green clock was on clearance and target & the canvases are from at Home

we have one storage space/closet on the upper lever and it’s in the bathroom behind the door – not ideal but we make it work – it’s an open space with no doors so i try to keep it organized and a bit styled since it’s all out in the open – the metal caddy holds products we use on daily basis and are within easy reach (plus it looks pretty 🙂 the baskets house towels, products, toilet paper, kleenex etc.

the large white framed mirror is from Lowes

i forgot to take a picture of the old vanity and mirror before it was ripped out but it was just an average builders grade bathroom setup, nothing special

i think the previous color was called lettuce leaf green … yikes.

and the dreaded boob light … who’s idea was it to install those lights in every house in america? 🙂

it honestly feel like i’m in a hotel bathroom everytime i go in there ♥ it’s clean lined & simple with a little bit of color here & there – such a huge difference! if i missed anything or if you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask me in the comments, i’ll do my best to answer. 🙂

little box of sunshine gift idea

we sent this happy little box to my mother in law for mothers day
and i thought i’d share here with you all in case you’re looking for a fun gift idea that’s easy to put together and is such a surprise to the recipient!

i saw the idea on pinterest and decided to put a box together to send off to North Carolina
and after a trip to target i had a bunch fun stuff …

that happiness book is really cute – there’s some funny things in it
i know this because i was chuckling in the isle at target while i flipped through it 🙂
i put all the little odds and ends in the clear catch all bag

i lined the inside of the box with some bright yellow paper & double sided tape
the brighter the paper the better! you want that box to shine when all the flaps are opened 🙂

the flat rate box from the post office is free! and you can pack it full no matter what the weight
and send it off for a flat rate fee priority mail (2-3 days) for around $15 i think, i can’t remember the exact rate but it’s around there 🙂

the paper i had was 8.5 x 11 and fit perfectly in this small flat rate box leaving only a little gap at the bottom on one side but you won’t be able to see it once you fill it up

a little trimming might be necessary near the top flaps
and i just placed a full sheet on the bottom with no tape

the best part is this clipart that i got here
from my best girl’s etsy shop – simply purchase, download, print and cut!
a little more of the double sided tape to place it where your heart desires and that’s it!

i also printed out the text from microsoft publisher on my PC – cut & taped that to the long flaps

fill you box and send it off!
i know whoever receives it won’t be able to help but be so happy 🙂
the only thing i was missing was yellow basket straw – you know that crinkled paperish stuff that comes in all different colors? filling the space at the top with that would’ve kept the yellow theme going, but i only had white tissue paper on hand, but yellow tissue paper would work too right?

some pictures of us girls on Mother’s Day ♥

that’s my mom – doesn’t she look good?!
hoping i get her slow aging genes 🙂

whatever Mother’s Day means for you i hope it was filled with joy and happines … even if it’s sort of a sad day for you whatever the reason, know that God works all things together for your good! even in the sadness (especially in the sadness) He’s molding & shaping you into who He wants you to be ♥ remember that every heartache and trial you face was first sifted through His hands before it got to you so take comfort in that girls.
much love to you

yarn wrapped fall wreath ♥

i love fall in upstate
it’s so pretty here
and the donuts and cider are everyyyyywherrrrre.
yum

i always get an itch to make a new wreath in the fall
and when i accidentally stumbled upon this beaaauuuutifuuul yarn in michaels last week
(i was looking for another type of yarn that i can’t find anywhere)
i knew i had to make something out of it

guys. this yarn is plush
it’s so soft and luxurious
i’m wondering now if there was other variations and i missed them because i was mesmerized with this one.

i picked up a styrofoam wreath form on the way out in isle 9
(just kidding i’m not really sure which isle the wreath forms were in but nine sounded good)
and wrapped it around and around and around
do this step while Jimmy Fallon is on – doing his Donald Trump impersonations
it goes faster if you are watching Jimmy Fallon

you can use hot glue to secure the ends onto the styro
in my case i was upstairs on my bed (watching Jimmy Fallon)
and i was too lazy to plug in my glue gun
so sewing pins work great too!

added a little Martha metallic paint to all the tips of a package of white feathers (from michaels too)
(ps i love Martha’s paint. it has the best thickness and THE BEST colors)
(cause well duh. she’s Martha)

i used pins to secure the feathers (or again hot glue would’ve worked great) starting near the bottom and working my way up towards the side
i dug through my ribbon stash and used some navy satin ribbon to wrap a sort of “cuff” around the one side hiding the feather tips that were left showing at the top

and that’s it! are you gonna make one?!
so easy. so fun

wreath. check
mums. check
pumpkins. check

i think my front porch is ready for fall!

rainbow pinwheel wreath!

hi all!
we’re back from a wonderful vacation, and boy.
it sure is hard to face reality when sleeping in and krispy kreme donuts for breakfast at 12:30 in the afternoon was life for two weeks. yikes.
so we’re trying to settle into a summer routine, it’s been a little tough so far this week but we’re striving for progress not perfection. and not staying in pj’s and watching tv all day is making progress. ha. my shop is closed for the summer leaving me SO much free time to do crafts with my girls, fun projects around the house, bike rides etc.
and project life! i’ve been hoarding PL supplies for about 3 years now and haven’t touched one album.
so i’m going to be working on that this summer too. any PL people out there? any tips for getting started? i want to keep it simple. i’m not a simple person and that’s what keeps me from getting disciplined activites like project life done and kept up with. so i need to make it uncomplicated!
anyways… back to this wreath 🙂
i found these ginormous rainbow pinwheels last month when we went into 5below and they had my name written all over them. i bought 6 and decided to try making a wreath with them somehow, and it was really simple actually
supplies you’ll need // styrofoam wreath form ( i got the largest one i could find)
// fabric strips // ribbon for hanging

the little pin the holds the pinwheel together comes apart very easily

and you’re left with just the pin part to push into the styrofoam wreath

i made holes with the pinwheel to kind of get an idea for spacing

i ripped some fabric into a really long strips and wrapped it around the wreath marking with a sharpie where the holes were in the styrofoam

once it’s covered and the holes are marked i snipped little holes in the fabric with really sharp scissors so i could push the pinwheels in easier

that’s it! i put some ribbon around the form and hung it with a command hook
i love our little front porch, my dream home would be in the country (sorta in the country 🙂 it would be white with black shutters with a wrap around front porch, rockers, bunting, lights and all … but this little porch makes me happy.
my hubby found these hanging strawberry plants at wegmans and thought we should try them
they have been SO AWESOME. we pick berries every few days and have them for breakfast or lunch and they’re sweet!

i really really do love summer. i just love it.

the begonias & succulents on the front porch are doing really well this year.
i think i’ll transplant the succulents into the back yard in the fall since they’re perennials.
the begonias were hanging baskets that i got at the market. i transplanted them into my chalkboard pots that i made at least 3 years ago… they’re holding up pretty good and they got nice and chippy.
i found the rocker on the curb probably 5 years ago. it’s seen a lot of colors and cans of spray paint. i love making something out of old things people just don’t want to bother with anymore.
much love to you and happy beautiful summer days!

Christmas card caddy ♥

i’m determined to get Christmas cards out this year.
de. ter. mined.

so when i saw this idea while reading one of my favorite blogs
i knew this would be the cute project incentive to get me going and keep me focused on getting those envelopes addressed. sounds so sad i know.

i got the silverware tray at target and the pulls & screws at Lowes (like she did i think)
the instructions are all on Jen’s blog … except i think a glue gun was used to attach the handles… but i had the hubs drill two holes on each end for the drawer pulls and used the screw size pictured to secure them. all screws have different thread sizes, so just make sure you buy the right thread size for whichever drawer pulls you pick out. (the nice man at Lowe’s helped me figure that part out)

i haven’t decided if i want to paint it yet.
(i know my husband will have to pick himself up off the floor after reading that)
(#paintallthethings)

or maybe decorate it? hmmm…

or maybe just leave it alone for pete’s sakes.
just leave something alone for once jaime.

it’s not like there’s tons of cute stuff in it anyways …
that it would make it overkill or anything
🙂

are all your decs up already?? only our tree is up … which is not good
i’m very very behind.
and i have a long list of projects, crafts and baking to do
and gifts to buy … sigh. gifts … yes lots of things to do
go to target today and get the stuff to make this caddy
it’ll make you smile.

oh and check out my previous years Christmas projects!
i forgot about some of these! cute!

a guest post and free printables from AmyJ ♥

hey all!
just taking bit of a break from all the hustle & bustle of life
between being under the weather
(let’s not even talk about the never-ending winter
that seems to be sticking around like i don’t know what)
and just wanting to regroup & restart, a breather is doing me some good.

but today is the best day ever.
my bloggy (and now real life!) bestie AmyJ. is guest posting here on my little blog.
which is so amazing to me since most of what you see here was designed by her hands
i’m always amazed at how God can take something as little as a blog or instagram or whatever and use it to bond us together with not just people, but kindred spirits.
that we would have never crossed paths with in the “real” every day of life.

i’m so blessed by it. i’m so blessed by Amy …
she is open, honest, caring, beautiful (inside & out) and loves Jesus somethin fierce.
and i’m so excited to show you what she’s been cookin’ up the past few weeks…
when i first read this post i eeeked & squeeeaked the whole way through

grab a cup a somethin and eeek & squeeeak along with me!

Let me introduce myself to you…  I’m wife to a bearded pastor, mamma to 5, illustrator and graphic designer, and Jaime’s bestie!  See Jaime and I share a common creative wavelength… it’s kinda creepy.

So I wanted to share some party ideas and a couple free printables with you today!

Okay, I have to admit something to you… I was going to show you a garland and some little woodland critter puppets and call it a day.  BUT my hubs was like, “You should do a woodland party! And make cupcakes!”  (I think he just wanted cupcakes.)  And then it kind of exploded.  So some how I ended up doing a full out mock version of a party we are apparently going to have for real in a month for two of my girls.  oy.  But hey!  It was fun and now I don’t have to do all the work in a month!

THE DECOR… girly, vintage, woodland style!

THE FOOD…cupcakes and strawberry marshmallow mushrooms!

THE FAVORS… woodland critter puppets and mini notebooks!

THE CUTE (soon-to-be) BIRTHDAY GIRL! … Lucy Lou… yes, that’s a gnome hat. he, he.

THE FREE PRINTABLES! … ’cause what’s a party without something to take home?!

Okay, so I also must tell you… that these crazy cute little woodland critter graphics that you see everywhere, are IN MY ETSY STORE!  I know… awesome, right!?  That means that you can make all this stuff too!

This is the invite I plan to use for the real party in a month…
I made this blank version, below, for you!
You can use it to make your own invites, signs, or even thank you notes!

* Just click on the image and save the .PNG file to your computer!
You can use it just like a photo image…

Then I also have some place cards for you!

**Please remember these printables are for personal use only.  May not be used for profit of any kind.  Files may not be distributed. Enjoy!

Okay… I’ve used up enough of Jaime’s blog space, y’all.  Time to say goodbye.
But hey!  Come on over to my blog and say hi!  And don’t forget to go pick up some of your own woodland animal clip art in my store… and then get crazy creative 🙂

Blessings… 🙂

kay. don’t lie.
you eeeeeek.
i know you did! and those printables …
thank you sweet Amy!

guys the other thing is, if you haven’t been to her blog already
you need to hop over and see … it just got a super sweet makeover
and everything is so fun to look at
i’m like a kid in a candy shop when i’m there

that little phone. i die.
kay i’ll stop.

but really, while you’re over there, spend some time in her home …
you’ll find so much inspiration in every little space

i love looking at her pictures
it’s easy to see we are like minded … we love our families, we love our homes
and expressing our creativity in every room ♥
i love it when friends inspire & challenge you
to try new things. to think outside the box
dont’ you?

and make sure you pour another cup cause you’ll be there for a bit.

so about next week!
i’m super excited to finally finish and post about this menu plan thing
that i’ve been workin on for like 10 years
(kay not really, but it’s been forever)
(it’s just dragging on and on)
(and it’s really not complicated so i have no idea why)

but all that to say that AmyJ. and i put our heads together to bring you a whole set of printables & a simple plan to keep meal planning easy
and more importantly super cute ♥

they are to adorable & affordable to say no to

… and next week we’ll have a few freebies for ya
cause we really love & appreciate you guys.
like a lot.
yeah.
i’m so excited about this!
(can you tell)
see you next week!

upcycled leg warmers ♥

i love making sweater hoops
i usually hit the thrift store and spend some time there picking out some fun prints
wash them out and they’re ready for a hoop!
what i’m left with though, is a pretty bowl of sweater sleeves

the knit fabric of the sweaters make for the perfect pair of leg warmers
to make a pair of your own is the easiest ever.

cut the arches off of the sleeves so they have straight tops

turn them wrong side out and fold the top edge over about 3/4 of an inch
pin in place if you need to.

run it through your sewing machine on the zigzag stitch
covering the edges as much as possible

find some lace and buttons and embellish!

i used my machine to gather the lace before sewing it on
(set your machine to the highest tension & highest stitch length
and sew right down the middle lengthwise. it gathers right up)
i used a straight stitch to sew the lace to the fabric once
then went around it again 1/4 of an inch under the first line

try the warmers on first and put a pin where you think the buttons should go
this helps making them even and in the same place on both legs.

that’s it!
now put your feet up and grab a cookie

diy ♥ my little pony necklaces

yay it’s friday ♥
and it’s almost the weekend
which means we need to make stuff … and valentines day will be here before you know it!
you NEED to put some of these together for all the little girls you happen to know 🙂

i made these last month,
when i had a little bit of time the week before Christmas to make a few gifts
and my craft night besties and i, have an annual cookie exchange/craft night
where we exchange not only cookies 🙂 but gifts for each other and for our daughters
(comin up with crafty gifts for boys seems harder right?)

and to make things a little easier most of our girls are really into my little ponies right now
and um … (clearing throat) so are the mamas.
(and one dad) (yeah you know who you are one dad)
loved how simple these necklaces were to put together!
what you’ll need:

– drill
– very tiny drill bit
– 1/2 inch screw eyes
(found these in that isle at Lowes
where all the washers & screws are in those little drawers)

– ball chains
(from hobby lobby – these were 18 inches)

– and some miniature my little ponies
(found these at toys r us)

the only thing that you really need to figure out is where to drill the hole for the eye screw
we stood the ponies up since they all have different heights & stances
then drilled a hole on the top of the head where we thought
they would hang best from the chain without being crooked
make sense?

screw the eye into your hole and that’s it!
it should look like this …

all the little girls loved them!
seriously i’ve considered wearing some … they make me so happy
they’d even be cute layered on top of each other if you make a bunch

twilight sparkle, pinkie pie and applejack
i just love how colorful they all are

and did you know pinkie & AJ are cousins?? yes they are. so my littlest little tells me
helloooo. mom. don’t you know this? it’s important stuff
mmkay.

there a few of these  in my etsy shop too!
if you’d rather scoop one up
without all the intimidation from the power tool
🙂

take a peek at this cute pony house project i made last year too while you’re here 🙂

happy making stuff!

ten things for thursday … housekeeping style ♥

i’m get super excited when it comes to making my own household products …
maybe it’s just the idea of making something yourself that doesn’t have to come from the store.
maybe it’s all the chemicals that i know are being left out that’s comforting …
or maybe it’s just cause it’s fun to make stuff 🙂

during the summer months i want to try out a few of the recipes that i’ve accumulated on my housekeeping board on Pinterest … i’m trying to convince my hottie hubby to get on board with me and try out the homemade deodorant …
not sure if that’s goin’ anywhere yet 🙂
here’s ten things i really really really want to make!

oh, and guys!
if you want to pin these projects
please do so from the original site
thanks. you all are the best.

♥

i’ve actually tried making dishwasher detergent before and it was a fail …
after reading up on it again, learned that whether you have hard or soft water determines which ingredients you should add into the mix … i need to give it a go again with this recipe

cleaning with vinegar is something i’m slowly getting used to … but the smell, not so much
i love this site, and i’ve gotten so many great household recipes from her that really work, so i’d love to give this a try

now this diy i can vouch for … i’ve made this lavender spray for housewarming gifts and hostess gifts
(if you don’t like the smell of lavender, guessing you could add any essential oil scent and it work the same)

this is one i’m excited to try … our garbage disposal gets so gross
citrus peels & ice help, but this looks like it might just give it that little boost of clean

garbage disposal refreshers – savvysugar.com

we have ceramic tile counter tops … and they’re white 🙂
looking for something to give them a little shine … this might do the trick
and i’m sure it will make the kitchen smell yummy too.

homemade lemon-scented all-purpose cleaner

lemon scented all purpose cleaner ~ simple bites

greasy hair girls need dry shampoo … unless you want to wash you hair everyday
which i do want to. but i don’t. anymore. i used to. not good for my hair.
and i do use store bought dry shampoo, but you should see the warning labels on these things! i feel like i should wear a gas mask everytime i use it … so i’m looking for a natural alternative … and i have dark hair. this one’s it. 🙂

dry shampoo

dry shampoo for dark hair ~ a step in the journey

mama’s have dark circles under their eyes
it comes with the territory 🙂 this recipe looks like fun.

my girls are most excited about this one, since they don’t like toothpaste because it’s too “spicy” ? and besides the fact that toothpaste has some of the same ingredients that are found in rat poison & industrial pesticides … ? yikes
after asking mr. google if this was true … i spent a couple hours reading stuff and getting freaked out. go. google it.

aaaaaand this i need to make because my windows are really dirty …
and i think this might just be the very best recipe. like ever. 🙂
(even if it’s not i like this picture)

the best window cleaner ~ she wears many hats

last but not least, the homemade deodorant … there are two recipes that i like.
my gal pal Ann Marie over at White House Black Shutters swears by this first one … and i trust her. since she’s hilarious …

this second one appeals to me because it’s more of a solid and the ingredients are a little different … either way i’m sure some tweaking will be required when you’re trying to make it work for you … go read both of these!

homemade moisturizing deodorant ~ the purposed heart

i also thought it would be nice to have all these recipes i’m trying, all together in one place.
if you decide they’re keepers, jot down the ingredients and your notes,
then it will be easy access when you plan to make more.

i tuck this away in our household binder, when stuff’s running low,
i know right where to find the how-to’s 🙂

ready to try some of these with me??
if you do or already have, tell me about it in the comments …
happy making! ♥
