pretty plate display … ♥

happy Friday!
some of you have wanted to know more about the plates hanging in the kitchen/office area
how i hung them & where to find them
so i thought i’d show you a few close-ups!

i stumbled across this on Pinterest
Christina from the Frugal Homemaker uses some felt & hot glue to hang her plates!
that’s it! no fancy gizmos!

plate hangar from paperclip

i have to be honest about this…
there was much discussion between the hubs & me about this method of
hanging stuff over tile counters
that he painstakingly installed not that long ago 🙂

but it really works! …
the hot glue really melts and welds the paper clip to the felt
 since it’s so fiber-ish
(know that’s not a word)
(but this is my blog … m’kay?)

they’ve been hanging for a few months now …
every so often i’ll peek to see if the clips are sliding out from under the felt…
nope! they’re cemented on!
we’re good 🙂

i have to admit …
i have a problem with plates
vintage plates to be specific
i love them, and have too many of them
(cept that mint one with the butterfly … that’s from TJ Maxx 🙂

i found most of these at yard/rummage sales, and the thrift stores
(some were given to me by family)

it’s almost yard sale season around here …
my favorite time of the year
🙂

here’s a few other displays i fell in love with from around the web …

{Canadian House & Home}

{Addicted 2 Decorating}

{Domestic Fashionista}

i hope this inspires you to find a blank wall in your home
bust out your glue gun & felt … and hang some plates!
have a wonderful weekend!
much love ♥

ten things for Thursday … living room project ideas

i mentioned a few posts ago that we’re working on some changes in our living room

(yes, we have a living room!)
(in all the hustle & bustle of my craft room being featured, many emails came my way about how i was lucky to have a hubby who would let me take our living space and turn it into a craft room!!
and where did we sit to watch tv, or play games as a family??
i tried to stress that it was a formal living room that we converted!
heehee 🙂

over the course of the spring & summer i hope to work on a few projects for this room
we painted and did some pillow re-covering 2 years ago,
but we moved on to other rooms in the house before i really worked on any of the details

so here’s 10 projects i chose from my home board on Pinterest
that i hope to incorporate in this room over the next few months 🙂
{click on the links below the images for original sources}

… i absolutely fell in love with these built-ins
we have the perfect blank wall, (on which the tv currently dwells)
that would be perfect for this set-up!
…and those globes! swoooney…

DSC_0580

… gets pretty chilly here in upstate NY
so blankets in our living room are a must
i have a bunch of pretty crocheted blankets
that really should be on display instead of crumpled up in a basket!
i love it when function & decorating come together with these types of ideas 🙂

… this bunting in Ashley Ann’s playroom is just the cutest thing!
it’s just perfect for this space … must. do. this.

… pretty pops of color like this table, would be perfect on some end tables i have

recycled map table

… this family room is so happy and colorful
Meg Duerksen’s mix of color & function makes this room a great place to spend time together
the chalkboard and the play table are perfect!

IMG_9114

… curtains! these are stunning… the burlap gives it just that right amount of shabbiness

… thinking about a bunch of colorful pillows full of texture and funk 🙂

… three lamps are in our living room
would love to convert a couple with lampshades like these

… a rug is always a great way to add color, but they never seem to come cheap
i love this idea from Apartment Therapy… take a few inexpensive throw rugs and sew them together for a burst of color

… this free printable from not just a housewife says it all 🙂
print it. frame it. hang it. remember it.

lovin’ this round-up … makes me so excited to get working on this room!!
be back tomorrow with a quick post 🙂 much love and gladness in my heart

vintage bluebird mason jar labels … ♥

it’s a brand new week ♥
let’s start it off with something vintage and something blue
(oh and let’s not forget the cute part 🙂

has been cranking out these super cute digital images lately
… these bluebird labels come in pink & in blue!
she sells them here in her shop

just mason jars & magnetic sheets is what you’ll need to have fun with these
(or even printing on paper would work well)
these blue jars are the revived vintage edition from Ball
i spotted them at my local grocery store
i’m not sure how long they’ll be around!

follow the directions for printing
cut them out…

then pop them into the lids … i like the magnetic sheets
because they stick to the top of the lid when it’s opened 🙂

i used a skinny Sharpie to write on the labels

add some bakers twine, and this becomes a great gift idea!
how fun would it be to receive a wooden crate with these inside
filled with craft supplies?!

thanks Keren for all the pretty pictures you make for us!
happy crafting ♥

kitchen office re-org! … ♥ part three

yay! the last part of my kitchen/office area re-organization…
take a peek!
this is where i blog, manage shop, and pin stuff 🙂
(heehee)

this area is a hot spot for paper piles & clutter
here’s a quick before picture
taken right before i tackled this whole section of the kitchen

ahhh… here’s an after 🙂
now just to keep it this way!!

the three drawers under the desk area house all office supplies
paperwork to be filed, paid and whatever else
i used another set of dipping dishes like in this drawer
this time to hold change for lunches & milk money
(that we always seem to be scrambling for at the last minute
while the bus driver is promptly arriving at the end of the driveway)
extra labels and all those reward/key-tag cards

the paper tray holds papers to be filed
with a small file folder to manage receipts we need to keep
and a three-hole punch

the second drawer takes care of all the itty bitties, calculators, notepads, tape …
these super durable plastic dishes were also from Target in the kitchen area

happy to say it does it’s job! it’s gotten to be a little messy and just a bit too full
so i might need to get on that 🙂

i use clothespins to hold notes and other random pieces of paper
(i’m a random pieces of paper kinda girl)

spruced up this little corner with some more cupcake paper flowers

and a perpetual calendar … if you want to make one the original project is from here

scored these pretty Martha Stewart binders at Staples…
still workin on what goes inside these … the solid one is for my day planner
the patterned ones will be for a household binder, meal planning and coupons
i’m re-vamping the whole system … it’s not an easy task, very time consuming
but when it’s all done i know it’ll be worth it
🙂

can’t wait to share it with you once it’s done!

i’m super excited about how this whole area came together
and so glad i tackled it just a little at a time
that’s the best way for me to accomplish things
or else i feel completely overwhelmed and i shut down!

how about you?
do you work on projects bit by bit
or jump right in-get-it-done-till-2am?
…acutually sometimes i’m both 🙂
but with functional organizing projects like this one
i think it’s good to take time to plan things out
then see what works best for you and your family …
when it’s all done, step back, admire your work
… and take some time to smell your cupcake flowers 🙂

ten things for Thursday … ♥

last week’s favorite things were so fun!
thanks for all the comments you left … i appreciate you!

i’m in spring cleaning/organizing mode
with warm weather fast approaching!
here’s ten organizing solutions (from my organizing board)
that i love & want to incorporate into my to-do list!

since i’m still stuck in kitchen mode, this idea for a baking drawer would be so neat!
so practical to have all of this in one spot 🙂

my girls love to play games … but they have to march into the basement to get them
love this idea! in all different jars and right in the living room to boot!
what about the boards and bigger pieces you ask??
i think i have a solution 🙂
(project alert!)

Games_rect540

even girls have legos 🙂
ok so we don’t have this many instruction books …
but for all you boy mamas out there… this is an awesome idea
(maybe we could make a mini binder and decorate it with flowers and pink paper? 🙂

our DVD’s have moved from place to place to place
but with some changes coming to our living room in the next few months
i think this might be a great solution … but i am a fan of ditching the cases and using inserts
(2nd possible project alert!)

In the Living Room

a donation bin is a great way to keep all the items designated for Goodwill in one place
instead of in little piles in every room… coat closet is where i would like to put one for us!
QSCC-copyright-simplify101

ok, ok … so it’s almost April i know
but this is a neat way to keep and compile Christmas cards
and have them ready to display when the Holidays are upon us …
really the only reason i’m talking about this now
is because there’s a pile of Christmas cards in my basement…
that seriously needs to go somewhere.

dresser drawers would look so much prettier with these in them
don’t ya think?
i might have a few lying around somewhere
hmmm…

before the age of Pinterest i had a hard time throwing away magazines
i knew all those cute ideas i’d seen in them would be lost forever
if i didn’t save them or cut and file them away
… any articles or ideas you come across and want to keep
would be accessible in books like these and pretty on a shelf too.

volumes on shelf

easy way to save any school projects, pictures, and momentos
i’ve always loved this idea … someday i will get it done 🙂

this chart in the cutest!
purge purge purge!!
if you don’t use it … let it make someone else happy 🙂
(or just get rid of it folks)

kitchen cabinet re-org … ♥ part two

i hope my last post inspired you to crack away at problem areas in your home! 🙂
so on to the bottom half of the kitchen/office are

for starters this was the junk drawer
‘cept we had two other drawers just like it elsewhere

it was a catch-all for random stuff

this is the cabinet below the junk drawer
oy.
i had the intention of making this whole area an “arts & crafts” station
then my craft room came along and that idea was toast 🙂
so it just became the cabinets with the “stuff” in it
stuff-that-was-out-on-the-counter-and-people-are-coming-over-so-we-have-to-hide-it-somewhere-stuff

so here’s the after … all cleaned up
with some help from my little friend Mr. Target
and a whole lotta indecisiveness
(like a ton of indecisiveness)

so first things first
i lined the drawers & pull-outs with wrapping paper
just like i did with the spice jar drawer

unlike in my spice drawer, where everything kinda just sits there,
i tacked these papers down with a little double sided adhesive
since we would be sliding bins and things in & out

some of the little things that helped organize these areas were inexpensive, simple solutions.
dipping dishes found in the kitchen section were the perfect size for herding small things together … and the metal rimmed tags keep all sorts of items from getting mixed up

take a closer look
the dishes hold spare or random keys
USB drives & memory cards
small size batteries & whatever else 🙂
using small pieces of washi tape, i labeled the cords
so now we know what’s what, and it’s in plain sight
no more searching for cords when we’re in a hurry 🙂

the cupboard below now stores my silhouette & all of our camera paraphernalia
(which really is more than i thought we had)

when i need to use the silhouette, just pull it out and plug it in
the bin next to it holds the postage scale i use for the shop
(multiple times a week … so having it handy, but out of sight is perfect)
extra ink cartridges for the printer, cords, and screen wipes
(cause our screens are always nasty & dusty)
(aren’t yours?)

ok, so this is kind of my favorite part
i mean i just love how this whole section of the kitchen turned out
but having a place to keep all of our camera equipment
just seems like the bomb diggedy 🙂
the lenses, the cords, the manuals, the batteries…
these’s so much of it
to not have to go here and there to find everything is just wonderful ♥

i used glue dots to affix the chalkboards on this bin
(and to the bin next to the silhouette)

top, clockwise: the old point & shoot, lenses & flash, dslr (and it’s cute camera strap)
my older daughter’s camera, battery charger & extra cords
(that the hubby told me “yes, we have to keep those”)
and an expandable file for all the manuals, warranties, and other paper stuffs that go with these machines

see?? isn’t it fun??
i’m just super happy with how this came together 🙂

what? the cute camera strap?
oh, you like it huh?
me too ♥
my sweet gal pal Andrea over at Knitty Bitties made it for me
she’s the bomb diggedy too 🙂
you can check out her blog here

and check out her etsy shop and the other cuteness she’s got goin’ on in there 🙂

ok got sidetracked a little…
back to the big before & after
here it is 🙂

wow … that was fun … way alot of work … but fun
one more post and the whole office area will be done
then on to meal plans, coupon & household binders
and another junk drawer 🙂
are ya with me??

much love ♥
sweet parties here ♥

simplify your kitchen – kitchen cabinet re-org! … part one ♥

i have a little secret to tell you …
i’m a piler
yes … a piler
as in i make piles
but i don’t like piles
i loathe them actually
and i don’t want any more piles
like ever

i’ve deduced (is this a word?) from my own psychological analysis
that pilers are also people who are indecisive
right?
cause the reason the pile gets made is because
a. there’s no place to put said item
b. there is a place to put said item,
but the piler is not sure which of the many options should become the home of the said item
(ie: do receipts go in the receipt file or with the owner’s manual?)
(do flashlights go with the candles in case of a power outage,
or with electronics? … cause they’re electronic)
(right? … are they? i mean if they run on batteries, they’re electronic right?)
(if the hubs is reading this post he’s rolling his eyes)
(well he doesn’t like eye rolling, so he’s probably doing some other gesture of embarrassment)

see… my brain hurts now

back to the piles
for those of you just gettin’ here 🙂
i decided at the beginning of the year to really go through the house and purge
just get back to basics
you can read more about that here, here and here

and for you gals who have been following right along …
i haven’t jumped the “simplify your kitchen” bandwagon
i just left the kitchen for a while …
to face the basement
now that that’s done … i’m back on track
(no, there’s no fancy organizing pics of the dungeon …
what happens in basement … stays in the basement)
(it’s not pretty down there folks)

let’s get goin’!
we have a very spacious kitchen … with lots of cabinet space
and lots of fun areas to organize
off of the kitchen is a little built-in office area
home to our computer, printer and basically where all family household duties are managed
(finances, schedules, blogging, etc…)
come to think of it, this little area wears many hats
making it more of a challenge to keep clutter-free and organized

here is a short list:

– first aid supplies
– houses miscellaneous household items
– where i blog & manage my etsy shop
– shipping area for my etsy shop
– bill pay
– meal planning & couponing
– household binder & files

my challenge:
to get this area out of the pile zone!
and into a functioning command center for our family

in comes my girlie girl
every month she throws out a challenge to organize a different area in your home
and i just love how she thinks everything through for you, making it that much easier to tackle your problem areas!

i copied her project list (from this post)
to my clipboard to keep me motivated … turned on some music
and was off to a running start 🙂

since there’s so much to cover in this little area of mine, i’m gonna break it down into a few posts
starting with the upper half of the cabinets next to the computer area

so the before really isn’t too bad …
i went through this cabinet last year and got things together
but after some time i realized the set-up would need some re-thinking
just a few things here that weren’t working right for us:

1. the baskets were much smaller than the space they were in
if you’ve got the space for storage … don’t waste it!

2. the baskets were pretty full
so the overflow was well … overflowing … everywhere else 🙂

3. we had to move or take some of the baskets out when we needed something in the baskets that were more towards the middle of the cabinet

4. the amount of candy canes that were in this cabinet was ridiculous

5. and yes those mini chalkboard apothecary jars are so stinkin’ cute, but they are for another project and don’t belong in there … so this cabinet started to become a catch-all!

to get this re-org in motion
i headed to my two favorite places and scoped out storage bins
(measure, measure, measure! before you go)

the wrapping paper & floral crates were from Target
(those crates are for the next post when i tackle the bottom portion of these cabinets)
and at Joanns i found the teal bins with the stripe and the mini chalkboards
(my favorite go-to label item)

aaaaaand the cute phone case is from here
(very random and not needed … just wanted to tell you where to get a cute phone case)

since these bins would be holding heavier items
i cut cardboard to fit into the bottom, to make it heavy duty
then wrapped them in the paper for a little bit of cute factor 🙂

they fit nicely inside and i knew they would hold up better in the long run

i dumped all the first aid supplies & medicines (and gum?) on the counter
and got rid of anything old or expired

for all of what was left i separated into two parts
first aid items: band-aids, cremes, medical tape, gauze
and cough drops

i corralled the smaller items into mason jars with white plastic lids
then added some labels i made on the computer
(the white lids are sold right with the canning supplies)

the other bin holds the rest of the medicines: pills, cold & cough etc…

let’s take a peek inside the other two! 🙂
thank you cards & envelopes are always great to have on hand
(i need to be better about this!)
any extra grocery or notepads were put in here as well

the last bin holds water bottles and drink packets

the smaller baskets on top were from the dollar store … they hold all the miscellaneous things:
party candles, toothpicks, plastic containers, etc…

chalk markers work great on these minis
the clothespins were from the $1 bins at Target
… easy way to label and then change things up when needed

so that’s it! phew …  a lot of function for one cupboard!
let’s do a before & after 🙂

next up! the lower half!

is your office area in your kitchen?
any organizing secrets to share?
let’s do some more … come back soon!

much gladness in my ♥
sweet parties! ♥
